Rachel Kramer Bussel Picks Symphony

And another short story has been chosen for publication!  “Symphony” was my submission for an anthology with a female fantasy theme.  I struggled over how to interpret that for a little while and then decided to write the fantasy itself rather than the frame story of the person fantasizing.  Guess that worked out!

In “Symphony”, a musicologist masturbates for her colleagues so they can use her sounds to create music that can make listeners come.  This story was inspired by a Kate Bush song about the opposite – “what they wanted was a sound that could kill someone from a distance” – made much, much more pleasurable.

I don’t have a publication date yet, but I imagine it will be in 2015.  As always, there’s one more hurdle – the Cleis Press editing round, but I’m more than hopeful that I will make the cut.  Fun stuff!

My Bois Got Picked!

I wrote a while back about submitting a story, Teamwork, to Sacchi Green for a boi-themed anthology.  Pending final Cleis Press acceptance, I’m in!

Thanks for choosing my story, Sacchi.  It’ll be great if we can do a reading for this book like we did for Girl Fever.  That was so much fun.

Lizzie’s Bedtime Stories

I’m a featured author on Lizzie’s Bedtime Stories, reading from my short story, “Cooling Down, Heating Up”.  The story was published in Radclyffe’s lesbian romance anthology, Love Burns Bright.

I had so much fun recording this.  Liz gave me the run-down on how the recording would work and I did the reading.

Being able to stop and get things right is a pleasure.  Live readings require the ability to continue, move on, even in the face of big mistakes.  I was never fond of performing piano for others, mostly because of this inability to go back and get things right.  Though I have enjoyed performing more as I’ve gained confidence, the recording process is a profound comfort.

In the story, I have the pleasure of wrapping my tongue around the language of strap-on butt sex, long-term loves, and more.

Afterward, we talked a while.  She’s quite fascinating, and we traded stories a bit.  It’s a pleasure to talk to someone who is sexually literate and proud of it.  I love to write detailed fuck scenes based on my own sexual experiences mixed with imagination and a geeky fascination with the ways that bodies work.  What fun to talk to someone who appreciates that and does the same!

So thanks, Liz, and thanks to all of you who listen to the story.  If you prefer reading your porn rather than listening to it, any of my three published stories hit the hot spots.

Submitting to Sacchi Green

by , on
October 24, 2013

I’ve submitted a story to Sacchi Green, for a new anthology she’s putting together, Me and My Boi.  I love the Erotica Readers and Writer’s Association website for calls for submissions, among other reasons.

“Teamwork” is about a couple of college jocks – racing sailors – who decide to complicate their partnership by acting on their desires.  I don’t go on and on about either of them being particularly masculine, but the story is largely about strength and they are both more boi-ish than not.

Mostly, I’d love to have another short story in an anthology edited by Sacchi.  The reading she put together for Girl Fever was a high point of last year.  I performed Floating in Space, nervous and excited, for a New York audience in the revered Bluestockings bookstore on the Lower East Side.  I wrote a post about the day on my sailing website.

I also signed a couple books.  Exhilarating milestones for a new author!

I’ll be doing a lot more readings and signings in the future, but Sacchi made that first one possible.  I hope she likes my story!

And I’m the star!

Reviewer Barbara says that “Goa” is “hands down the hottest story in this anthology”.  But no need for me to quote the whole thing – read the review for yourself.

Bold Strokes Books Press Release

by , on
October 5, 2013

Bold Strokes Books has sent out the official press release announcing their acquisition of my novel, Blue Water Dreams.  It’s exhilarating to see this book get rolling.

Wry smile into the camera

I now have an author’s page on the Bold Strokes Books website and a website of my own, here.  My other blog is sailing and traveling focused, but I have no plan to be strict in separating my world into writing and non-writing.  Funny, but everything I write feels like writing!

All that aside, I’m building a presence on the web.  Friend me wherever you find me and invite me if I’m missing out on a community somewhere.  Getting connected is my big goal right now, at least until the edited copy of my manuscript comes back for revision.

So, cue drumroll.  Here’s the press release:

October 1, 2013 Press Release:  New Title from Dena Hankins

Bold Strokes Books is pleased to announce the acquisition of  Dena Hankins’s new romance, Blue Water Dreams, scheduled for release in 2014 from Bold Strokes Liberty Editions.

Blue Water Dreams Coming in 2014

Lania Marchiol keeps a wary sailor’s gaze trained on the horizon. Somewhere out there, the perfect boat is waiting to take her around the world in a self-sufficient home powered by wind, sunshine, and the strength of her will. When she finds it, she’ll sell her beloved antique printing press, retire her renowned literary magazine, and wave good-bye to her life on land.

When a suave filmmaker flirts his way into her literary life, Lania must fight to maintain a steady heading toward the high seas. The magnetism of wickedly handsome trans man Oly Rassmussen sends her trusty compass spinning off course and they must reimagine freedom and love in order to sail together in the greatest adventure of all.

About the Author

Dena Hankins writes aboard her boat, whether on the high seas or in a quiet anchorage. She spent eight years as a sexpert at Babeland, soaking up the most stimulating stories of human sexuality, and is honored to provide some tales in return. Being a military brat, wanderlust is deep in her, and she has been sailing since 1999, covering waters from Seattle to San Francisco, across to Hawaii, and from Virginia to Maine. Her first three publications are erotic short stories with far-flung settings—India, North Carolina, and deep space. Whether traveling in the physical world or ranging far in her imagination, she is happiest accompanied by her partner of seventeen years.
